Principal SSD Systems Design Engineer

Role Summary

As Principal SSD Systems Design Engineer in Micron's SSD Product Development Team, you will lead system architecture, guide cross-functional execution from concept to high-volume manufacturing, and mentor engineering staff. The role requires deep SSD technical authority and influence across global teams.

Onsite role based in Longmont, CO; remote and hybrid arrangements are not supported.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include system-level design, cross-domain debugging, characterization, and stakeholder communication.

  • Lead system-level design definition and reviews for SSD products, aligning roadmap, customer requirements, and platform capabilities.
  • Drive resolution of complex multi-domain technical issues (firmware, hardware, systems) using structured, data-driven debug approaches.
  • Define and implement system-level characterization strategies for power, thermal, performance, and reliability.
  • Serve as primary technical interface for executive partners, customers, and global engineering teams.
  • Lead lessons-learned initiatives and continuous improvement of SSD development methodologies.
  • Mentor engineers and shape technical direction through leadership and influence.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and demonstrable systems experience. Preferred items listed concisely.

  • Deep expertise in SSD architecture: controller design, FTL, wear-leveling, NAND lifecycle.
  • Strong knowledge of PCIe and NVMe protocols and performance optimization.
  • Experience in system-level design, debug, and characterization across development phases.
  • Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation and board-level debug.
  • Proven ability to drive cross-functional technical initiatives and resolve complex system issues.
  • Preferred: programming skills for automation (Python, C++, or Bash); experience with SSD ASICs, firmware integration, system-level co-design, and power/thermal optimization; experience leading multi-functional teams and engaging with customers.

Education Requirements

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience. Preferred: advanced degree (MS or PhD) in EE, CE, CS, or a related technical field. Equivalent practical experience is explicitly accepted.
