Principal / Sr. Staff PD Implementation Expert
Role Summary
Lead backend physical design implementation for high-performance SoCs, owning the RTL-to-GDSII flow with emphasis on power recovery, clock tree optimization, timing closure and achieving aggressive PPA targets on advanced technology nodes.
Work across floorplanning, synthesis, placement, CTS, routing and signoff while collaborating with RTL, DFT and signoff teams to drive designs to manufacturable tapeout.
Experience Level
Senior — typically 10+ years of experience in physical design implementation.
Responsibilities
The role is responsible for executing the full physical design flow and ensuring PPA and manufacturability goals are met.
- Own RTL-to-GDSII execution: floorplanning, synthesis, placement, Clock Tree Synthesis (CTS), routing and signoff.
- Optimize Power, Performance, Area using multi-voltage domains, power gating (UPF) and datapath optimizations.
- Lead static timing analysis across multiple corners and modes; resolve setup/hold violations and clock domain crossing issues.
- Execute physical verification tasks: DRC, LVS, EM/IR analysis and equivalence checking (LEC/Formality).
- Collaborate with RTL, DFT and signoff teams to iterate on design architecture and converge the PD cycle.
- Develop and maintain automation/scripting (Tcl, Python, Perl) to improve flows and methodologies.
Requirements
Core must-have skills and experience for the role; concise list.
- 10+ years of hands-on physical design implementation experience.
- Deep experience in floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing and timing closure.
- Strong understanding of static timing analysis, power analysis and signal integrity.
- Experience with EDA toolflows such as Fusion Compiler, Innovus, PrimeTime, Tempus, VCLP, LEC, Calibre and RedHawk.
- Proficient scripting/automation skills in Tcl, Python or Perl.
- Effective teamwork and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
- Experience mentoring or coaching junior engineers is a plus.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related technical field.
