Job Title

Principal SoC Power Architect

Role Summary

Join Microsoft's Compute Silicon & Manufacturing Engineering (CSME) team to model and optimize power for datacenter processor SoCs, inform architecture trade-offs, and drive power convergence across pre-silicon and post-silicon stages. The role works with RTL, physical design, manufacturing, and validation teams to deliver power-efficient SoC solutions for cloud infrastructure.

Experience Level

Senior-level individual contributor. See Education Requirements for degree-and-experience combinations or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on power modeling, architecture guidance, and cross-functional execution.

  • Model processor SoC power across workloads and produce power-constrained performance projections.
  • Use modeling results to inform SoC architecture and trade-offs.
  • Maintain and extend power models for IPs and SoC generations.
  • Collaborate with RTL and physical design teams to propose and implement power optimization techniques.
  • Coordinate with silicon manufacturing and validation teams on post-silicon planning, guidance, projection, and debug.
  • Evaluate power-management feature impact in pre-silicon and post-silicon flows.
  • Make opportunistic contributions to power-management solutions and implementations.

Requirements

Must-have qualifications and constraints for the role; preferred skills are grouped separately.

  • Proven experience modeling SoC or processor power and using models to drive architectural decisions.
  • Practical experience collaborating with RTL, physical design, manufacturing, and validation teams to deliver power targets.
  • Ability to work on pre-silicon and post-silicon power analysis and debug.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft and customer security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
  • Must be eligible to access export-controlled information; successful candidates must provide proof of citizenship or lawful residency as required.
  • Travel: typically less than 25%.

Nice-to-have:

  • Deep understanding of SoC power contributors and power-constrained performance methodology.
  • Familiarity with silicon process impacts on power and power-management mechanisms.
  • High-level knowledge of datacenter processor SoC architecture.

Education Requirements

Doctorate (PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field plus 3+ years technical engineering experience; OR Master's degree in those fields plus 6+ years; OR Bachelor's degree in those fields plus 8+ years; OR equivalent practical experience. Fields referenced: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical fields.
