Job Title

Principal Quantum Measurement Engineer

Role Summary

Lead measurement strategy and experimental efforts for quantum materials and device platforms within Microsoft Quantum. Drive cryogenic characterization, develop new measurement capabilities, and translate experimental data into actionable insights that influence materials selection, fabrication, device design, and system scalability. Cross-disciplinary, principal-level individual contributor role with broad technical ownership.

Experience Level

Senior — principal-level individual contributor. See Education Requirements for the degree + years combinations that define minimum experience.

Responsibilities

Own the design and execution of measurement programs to evaluate quantum materials and devices and inform hardware development.

  • Define and lead cryogenic electrical characterization campaigns, including millikelvin-temperature and high magnetic-field experiments.
  • Develop and deploy novel measurement techniques, protocols, and instrumentation for emerging qubit systems.
  • Drive large-scale experiments: data acquisition, statistical analysis, and reporting of results to engineering and leadership teams.
  • Translate experimental results into recommendations for materials, fabrication, and device architecture.
  • Provide technical leadership for pathfinding devices and next-generation quantum architectures.
  • Partner across materials science, nanofabrication, theory, and device design teams to accelerate development.
  • Communicate complex experimental findings clearly to cross-functional and leadership audiences.

Requirements

Concise list of the role's practical requirements and preferred technical capabilities.

  • Must have: Proven track record leading experimental measurement programs for quantum devices or related systems.
  • Cryogenic electrical measurement experience and familiarity with cryogenic test setups and challenges.
  • Hands-on data acquisition and analysis skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and experience in statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Experience with RF measurement and/or time-domain control techniques.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft security and export-control screening requirements and to verify citizenship or protected status as required for the role.
  • Ability to use AI and automation tools to improve experiment throughput, analysis, and reproducibility.
  • Nice to have: experience with topological, spin, or superconducting qubits; quantum characterization/verification/validation (QCVV); multi-qubit or system-level experiments; applying AI/ML to experimental workflows; publications or patents; mentoring and building measurement teams.

Education Requirements

Doctorate (PhD) in Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field preferred; OR Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field with 6+ years of industry or R&D experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field with 8+ years of industry or R&D experience; OR equivalent practical experience. Fields explicitly referenced include Physics and Engineering. The role may require verification of citizenship or protected status for export-control compliance.
