Role Summary
The Principal Optical Product Engineer leads NPI and product engineering for optical modules and light engines, moving products from R&D/NPI through pilot to volume production. The role partners with design, supply chain, manufacturing partners (OSATs/CMs), quality and marketing to define manufacturing, test, qualification and production release plans.
Experience Level
Senior level — minimum 10 years of industry experience in product engineering or product development for volume production (see Requirements for details).
Responsibilities
Core responsibilities include driving manufacturing readiness, product release, and production sustainment for silicon photonics and optical transceiver products.
- Serve as NPI/product engineering owner for optical modules and light engines (NPO/CPO).
- Develop end-to-end manufacturing and test solutions with design, supply chain, quality, OSATs and CMs; qualify and release products to production.
- Define, validate and release production flow and specifications through prototype and pilot builds.
- Drive early DFM and PFMEA discussions to identify and mitigate manufacturing risks.
- Own BOM release, alpha/beta/pilot builds, production bring-up, yield improvement, and troubleshooting.
- Partner with quality on reliability de-risking and qualification activities.
- Sustain production post-release in collaboration with offshore manufacturing teams and contract manufacturers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required to perform the role.
- Minimum 10 years of industry experience in product engineering or product development for volume production, with a focus on silicon photonics, optical transceiver modules, or subassemblies.
- Strong experience in opto-electrical testing and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with assembly and packaging processes such as wire bonding, die attach, wafer packaging, and active optical alignment.
- Proven NPI and manufacturing experience for optoelectronic modules is highly desirable.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills; experience driving yield improvement and manufacturing readiness.
