Principal Lead Field Applications Engineer - Processor IP, Software, and Custom Silicon
Role Summary
Customer-facing technical individual contributor supporting Industrial, Automotive, and IDM customers across North America. Enable design wins by mapping customer requirements to MIPS processor IP, software toolchains, and custom silicon solutions. Based in Santa Clara and field-deployed to support pre-sales and early development phases.
Experience Level
Senior - typically requires 10+ years in Field Application, Applications, or Design Engineering supporting semiconductor IP, SoC/ASIC, or embedded systems.
Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership to customers and internal teams throughout pre-sales and early development to secure design wins and ensure successful integration of processor IP, software, and custom silicon.
- Serve as primary technical interface during pre-sales and early development; conduct presentations, architectural reviews, and product demonstrations.
- Support customer engineering teams in evaluating and adopting MIPS solutions; advise on processor IP integration, toolchains, and system architecture.
- Drive design-in activities and support technical discussions to secure CPU IP licenses, custom silicon programs, and software solutions.
- Assist customers transitioning from evaluation to implementation and support system-level optimization for performance, power, and cost.
- Partner with Business Development and Sales; contribute technical input to proposals, RFIs, and customer materials.
- Engage ecosystem partners, participate in customer workshops and industry events, and help position solutions within the semiconductor ecosystem.
- Perform work in compliance with Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience to perform the role; preferred items listed separately.
- 10+ years in Field Application Engineering, Applications Engineering, or Design Engineering supporting customer engagements and design wins.
- Experience in Semiconductor IP, SoC/ASIC development, embedded systems, or Industrial/Automotive/IDM electronics markets.
- Proven track record supporting customer engagements and securing design wins.
- Strong understanding of electronic architectures (MCUs, SoCs, domain/zonal controllers) and system-level design and integration.
- Familiarity with processor architectures and embedded software development (compilers, SDKs, operating systems).
- Hands-on technical skills and strong debugging capability; ability to operate independently in a field-based role.
- Strong customer-facing communication and problem-solving skills; ability to translate technical depth to customer business needs.
- Fluent in English.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with RISC-V ecosystem or CPU IP integration.
- Prior experience supporting Industrial, Automotive, or IDM customers in North America.
- Experience with SoC development and custom silicon implementation flows.
- Understanding of functional safety standards or design requirements in Industrial & Automotive markets.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in an engineering discipline or similar.
