Principal Hardware Engineer
Role Summary
Senior hardware systems engineer responsible for end-to-end hardware design, validation and production support for high-end routing platforms. Works with architects, product managers, software, test, NPI and manufacturing teams to move products from concept to mass production and customer support.
Experience Level
Senior-level. The posting requests 10+ years of relevant experience in board design and/or FPGA design.
Responsibilities
Technical leadership across hardware design, validation and production support for networking products.
- Participate in product feasibility, definition and architecture trade studies.
- Create and review specifications, schematics, BOMs, prototype lab bring-up and maintenance.
- Develop hardware test plans and review/approve test reports (EDVT, MDVT, NEBs, HALT, Safety, EMC).
- Serve as technical lead and collaborate with signal integrity, power, thermal, PCB, mechanical, DFM/DFT and lab teams.
- Define diagnostics tests for manufacturing and development; support manufacturing, customer support and sustaining teams.
- Work with program management and engineering leads on project status and component engineering for external component selection and qualification.
- Interface with external component suppliers on implementation and debug; mentor junior hardware engineers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.
- Must-have: 10+ years experience with board design and/or FPGA design.
- Expert proficiency in electrical circuit and schematic design, including embedded CPU and SoC subsystems.
- Deep systems-level knowledge across software, firmware/BIOS, PCB layout, signal integrity, mechanical, thermal, power, EMI compliance, manufacturability, testability, MTBF and COGS.
- Proficient in advanced techniques for multi-layer, high-speed PCB design and debug of PCIe, Ethernet, I2C, clocks, high-speed SerDes and high-speed memory interfaces.
- Hands-on debugging with lab equipment such as high-speed oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers and VNAs.
- Experience with FPGA design and operation, including Verilog programming, FPGA simulation and synthesis.
- Experience in a Unix/Linux environment.
- Role requires onsite presence in Sunnyvale at least 2 days per week.
- Nice-to-have / Preferred: experience designing high-volume routers/switches and testing L2/L3 products with packet generators (Ixia, Spirent).
- Familiarity with pluggable optics (QSFP-DD, OSFP), switch fabrics and WAN interfaces.
- Experience with Cadence Allegro PCB Designer and ePD/Viewlogic schematic tools.
- Scripting and automation skills (Python, Perl, TCL).
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
