Principal Hardware Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver analog, digital, and electro-optic hardware for a fault-tolerant quantum computing system. The role sits on the Electronics team and works in cross-functional groups including thermal, mechanical, firmware, and optical engineering to meet system architecture and manufacturing requirements.
The work focuses on PCB-level design, signal integrity, test and characterization, and supporting productization for volume manufacturing.
Experience Level
Senior level. The role expects approximately 10 years of relevant product development experience, including experience taking products to volume manufacturing.
Responsibilities
Own hardware design and validation activities required by the system; collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver production-ready electronics.
- Create schematics and oversee PCB layout for analog and digital circuitry, including high-speed transceivers, 10+ Gbps electrical and optical links, FPGAs, microcontrollers, clock distribution, and power systems.
- Ensure robust signal integrity and EMI suppression in designs.
- Design and implement test setups for electro-optic modules and related subsystems.
- Characterize, optimize, and debug circuits using mixed-signal/sampling oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, signal generators, multimeters, and DC power supplies.
- Develop software and scripts to automate measurements and extract performance metrics.
- Analyze test data and report key performance parameters; iterate on designs based on findings.
- Maintain detailed documentation of designs, test procedures, results, and design changes to support release to volume manufacturing.
Requirements
Key qualifications and skills required to perform the role.
- Minimum ~10 years of relevant experience in product development and release to volume manufacturing.
- Proven experience with PCB schematic capture and overseeing PCB layout for high-speed analog and digital circuits.
- Hands-on expertise with high-speed transceivers, multi-gigabit electrical/optical links, clock distribution, and power filtering/topologies.
- Strong signal integrity and EMI mitigation skills.
- Experience designing and running test setups; comfortable with test equipment listed in Responsibilities.
- Ability to write software or scripts to drive measurements and process test data.
- Clear engineering documentation practices and experience supporting product handoff to manufacturing.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams in a hardware development environment.
Education Requirements
Master's or Ph.D. degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
