Job Title

Principal Firmware Engineer

Role Summary

Join Arm’s Architecture and Technology Group in Cambridge to design and prototype firmware and system architecture features for next-generation Arm-based devices. Work with cross-functional specialists to develop, evaluate and deploy power, performance, and thermal management solutions used across the Arm ecosystem.

Experience Level

Senior — principal-level engineering role; typically 7+ years of relevant experience or equivalent senior expertise.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Architect and prototype system firmware features and novel power, performance, and thermal management mechanisms.
  • Define and implement OS mechanisms (for example Linux) to improve power and thermal behavior.
  • Design and run experiments and analyses on silicon, simulators, and models to answer architectural questions.
  • Communicate technical results and design rationale to engineers, architecture peers, and senior technology and business leadership.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience:

  • Strong programming skills in C.
  • Experience developing Linux kernel drivers and embedded firmware.
  • Knowledge of System-on-Chip architectures and methods for power and thermal management in OS and firmware.
  • Ability to make high-level design trade-offs and articulate rationale to partners.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills; comfortable resolving ambiguity.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with Arm CPU and SoC system architectures.
  • Experience with firmware interfaces such as ACPI or device tree.
  • Hands-on power management software or firmware experience and sector-specific PM/thermal knowledge.
  • Experience with debuggers and analysis tools for OS and hardware usage.

Education Requirements

B.Sc. in Electronic, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. The posting explicitly allows equivalent experience in lieu of the degree.
