Principal Field Applications Engineer – Processor IP, Software, and Custom Silicon

Role Summary

Customer-facing technical individual contributor responsible for enabling design wins by mapping customer requirements to MIPS' processor IP, software toolchains, and custom silicon solutions. The role supports Industrial, Automotive, and IDM customers across North America and works closely with sales, business development, and product teams.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Requires significant field/application engineering experience (see Requirements).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on pre-sales technical engagement, design-in support, and solution enablement to secure customer design wins.

• Serve as primary technical interface for customers during pre-sales and early development phases.
• Deliver customer presentations, architecture reviews, and product demonstrations.
• Support customer engineering teams in evaluating and adopting processor IP, software toolchains, and custom silicon solutions.
• Drive design-in activities and technical discussions to secure CPU IP licenses, custom silicon programs, and software solutions.
• Provide system-level guidance for performance, power, cost, and functional-safety considerations.
• Partner with business development and sales to support proposals, RFIs, and opportunity closure.
• Engage ecosystem partners, participate in workshops and demos, and represent solutions at industry events.
• Operate independently in a field-based capacity while adhering to safety and EHS requirements.

Requirements

Must-have technical background and proven customer-facing experience. Preferred items listed separately.

• 10+ years in Field/Application Engineering, Applications Engineering or Design Engineering focused on semiconductor IP, SoC/ASIC development, or embedded systems.
• Proven track record supporting customer engagements and securing design wins.
• Strong understanding of industrial, automotive, or IDM electronic architectures (MCUs, SoCs, domain/zonal controllers).
• Familiarity with processor architectures, embedded software development (compilers, SDKs, OS), and system-level design and integration.
• Hands-on technical mindset with strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent customer-facing communication skills and ability to translate technical detail into customer business value.
• Ability to operate independently in a field-based role across North America.
• Fluent in English.

Preferred:

• Experience with RISC-V ecosystem or CPU IP integration.
• Prior experience supporting industrial, automotive, or IDM customers in North America.
• Experience with SoC development and custom silicon implementation flows.
• Understanding of functional safety standards or design requirements in Industrial & Automotive markets.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in an engineering discipline or similar field; equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
