Job Title

Principal Engineer, Digital IC Design and Architecture

Role Summary

Lead architecture and digital design for high-speed SerDes-based ICs on the Automotive OpenGMSL team. The role focuses on defining architectures, driving RTL and verification work, and coordinating mixed-signal integration to deliver connectivity solutions for automotive and adjacent markets.

Based in Beaverton, OR or Colorado Springs, CO; supports silicon bring-up, standards development, and product introductions.

Experience Level

Senior β€” expects an experienced engineer. Typical guidance from the posting: Master's +7 years or PhD +4 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include architecture, RTL design, verification, and cross-functional delivery.

  • Architect and design digital blocks and subsystems for high-speed SerDes ICs, including gigabit serial interfaces and video/data routing.
  • Drive development and evolution of OpenGMSL technology and participate in technical standards and industry committees.
  • Create block- and subsystem-level specifications and lead design and peer reviews.
  • Design RTL using Verilog/SystemVerilog for blocks, subsystems, and top-level integration.
  • Develop block-level testbenches, verify functionality, and collaborate on full-chip verification and coverage closure.
  • Perform digital backend tasks: linting, CDC analysis, power analysis, synthesis constraints, and timing closure support.
  • Coordinate mixed-signal integration, real-number modeling, and mixed-signal verification with analog teams.
  • Support silicon bring-up, lab characterization, and debug activities.
  • Provide technical leadership for complex SerDes subsystems and mentor engineering teams.

Requirements

Core must-have skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.

Must-have:

  • Experience designing and verifying complex digital systems using Verilog/SystemVerilog.
  • Ability to architect system-level designs and translate product concepts into robust implementations.
  • Knowledge of communication theory and high-speed SerDes transceiver architectures.
  • Experience with timing analysis, power estimation, physical design trade-offs, and DFT concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with silicon bring-up and lab debug.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and a proven track record delivering products to market.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with SerDes standards and protocols (Ethernet, USB, PCIe, DisplayPort/CSI/DSI/HDMI).
  • Experience authoring technical standards or participating in industry standards committees.
  • Behavioral modeling for mixed-signal verification and DSP design experience (Matlab, digital filters).
  • Previous team or project leadership experience.

Education Requirements

Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) with 7+ years relevant experience, or PhD in Electrical Engineering with 4+ years; or equivalent practical experience.
