Principal Engineer - Device Modeling and Characterization
GlobalFoundriesJob Title
Principal Engineer - Device Modeling and Characterization
Role Summary
Develop and validate DC and RF device models (BJT, varactor, diode, inductor, transmission lines, resistor) and extract model parameters from measurement data. Work with device, lab, and modeling teams to define test structures, debug measurements, and produce technical reports and recommendations.
Experience Level
Senior-level. The posting requests PhD or M.Tech/MS candidates and lists experience guidance of 0β4 years.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include measurement-driven model extraction, data analysis, and cross-team collaboration.
- Perform device model extraction and characterization for DC and RF (Diodes, BJTs, Varactors, Inductors, Transmission Lines, Resistors).
- Analyze device data using semiconductor device physics to identify behavior and discrepancies.
- Use S-, Y-, Z-parameters and related techniques to extract RF models and support de-embedding workflows.
- Define test structures and layout requirements; coordinate with layout and lab engineers.
- Collaborate with device, modeling, and lab teams to troubleshoot measurement and device issues.
- Prepare technical reports summarizing results and recommend actions.
- Follow Environmental, Health, Safety & Security (EHS) requirements in all activities.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and work expectations. Preferred skills are listed separately.
- Hands-on experience with device model extraction and characterization for DC and RF devices (Diodes, BJTs, Varactors, Inductors, Transmission Lines, Resistors).
- Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics and ability to apply it to measurement data analysis.
- Practical experience using S-parameters, Y-parameters, Z-parameters for model extraction and validation.
- Ability to define test structures and collaborate with lab/layout engineers to implement measurements.
- Effective communication skills in English (written and verbal) to document results and present recommendations.
- Adherence to safety and EHS protocols in laboratory and production environments.
Nice-to-have:
- Familiarity with EM/simulation tools such as EMX, ADS Momentum, or HFSS.
- Experience with RF measurement techniques including de-embedding.
Education Requirements
PhD or M.Tech/MS in Electrical Engineering (or closely related technical field) with specialization or experience in Device Modeling, RF modeling, or Semiconductor Devices. The posting specifies 0β4 years of experience for the listed degree levels.
