Principal Engineer - Analog and Mixed-Signal Physical Design
Role Summary
Hands-on principal engineer responsible for driving physical implementation, timing closure, physical verification readiness, and custom IP integration for analog and mixed-signal silicon IP within Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE).
The role partners across analog design, custom layout, CAD/methodology, timing, verification, and silicon integration teams while remaining directly involved in implementation and debug through tapeout-equivalent milestones.
Experience Level
Senior-level (Principal). Typical experience expectation: senior/principal engineers with substantial hands-on silicon physical design experience—commonly 8+ years of relevant industry experience or equivalent.
Responsibilities
Execute and lead physical implementation and closure for analog and mixed-signal IP; provide technical direction across multiple disciplines.
- Drive hands-on floorplanning, placement, routing, optimization, ECO implementation, and closure debug for analog/mixed-signal blocks.
- Execute and guide Fusion Compiler-based APR flows and own implementation quality and signoff readiness.
- Perform timing analysis, constraint review, timing ECO strategy, and timing closure activities (including PrimeTime familiarity).
- Coordinate with custom layout engineers to ensure layout feasibility, extraction, physical verification, and integration quality.
- Serve as technical bridge between analog design, custom layout, physical design, verification, CAD/methodology, product engineering, and silicon integration.
- Debug and resolve complex issues related to extraction, physical verification, reliability, and release readiness.
- Lead and review deliverables for internal and external/V-team resources, aligning quality expectations and schedules.
- Contribute to design reviews, implementation quality improvements, signoff planning, and execution strategy.
- Mentor engineers and provide principal-level technical leadership while remaining hands-on in critical execution work.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security/export eligibility, and leadership capabilities.
- Proven hands-on experience with Fusion Compiler-based APR and physical implementation flows (floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing, ECOs, optimization).
- Strong timing-closure skills and experience with timing analysis/debugging methodologies (experience with PrimeTime preferred).
- Experience with physical design verification, signoff readiness, and implementation-quality methodologies.
- Working understanding of custom analog layout, Virtuoso-based methodologies, extraction, and layout-integration considerations.
- Demonstrated ability to debug complex physical-design and integration issues across mixed-signal-adjacent IP.
- Experience coordinating cross-functional and distributed teams, including external/V-team/vendor resources, while remaining hands-on.
- Strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills; proven track record of principal-level technical leadership.
- Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check, and to provide proof of citizenship or U.S. residency as required for export-control regulations.
Education Requirements
Doctorate in EE/CE/CS or related field with 3+ years' technical experience, OR Master’s in EE/CE/CS or related with 6+ years, OR Bachelor’s in EE/CE/CS or related with 8+ years, OR equivalent practical experience. Candidates must be able to provide proof of citizenship or lawful U.S. residency for export-control assessment.
