Principal Embedded Software Engineer
Role Summary
Principal-level engineer on the Silvus (Motorola Solutions) Software Engineering team responsible for architecture and development of embedded firmware and networking software for MANET radios. The role covers device drivers, networking stacks, security features, and system-level testing.
Position is based in West Los Angeles, CA on a hybrid schedule (minimum 3 days onsite per week: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday).
Experience Level
Senior / Principal level β requires substantial experience. Posting specifies 8+ years of relevant embedded systems software development experience.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include design, implementation, and verification across firmware, networking, security, and platform support.
- Lead architecture and development of low-latency embedded firmware on ARM-based SoCs and optimize Linux-based networking stacks for wireless applications.
- Design and implement MAC and mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) routing protocol software.
- Develop network management software and web interfaces.
- Implement security protocols and encryption algorithms; improve product security and robustness to meet standards such as NIST FIPS 140-3 and NIAP Common Criteria.
- Implement audio streaming and push-to-talk voice applications.
- Create and maintain device drivers and board support packages for ARM and RISC-V systems.
- Develop testing software for performance and reliability verification.
- Customize Linux systems, write scripts, and implement interrupt service routines as needed.
- Perform other engineering tasks and field tests; occasional travel (10β25%).
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security/background constraints, and experience expectations.
- 8+ years of embedded systems software development experience focused on networking, signal processing, or wireless applications.
- Hands-on and lead experience developing embedded firmware running embedded Linux on ARM processors.
- Strong expertise in C programming and experience with Linux kernel driver development.
- U.S. Citizen required (role involves U.S. government contracts). Employment contingent on background check and drug test.
- Ability to work on-site in West Los Angeles on a hybrid schedule (minimum 3 days per week).
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with security/encryption suites (e.g., CNSA), IPsec, data authentication, and cryptographic implementations.
- Socket programming and familiarity with Internet/Ethernet protocols.
- Experience with AMD UltraScale+ MPSoC and Microchip PolarFire SoC BSP development.
- Experience with Linux interrupt handling and performance optimization.
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering field. (Degree listed explicitly in the basic/required qualifications.)
