Principal EDA R&D Engineer
NVIDIAJob Title
Principal EDA R&D Engineer
Role Summary
Lead design and development of electronic design automation (EDA) tools and algorithms to support advanced digital/physical design flows. Work with cross-functional silicon design and software engineering teams to define tool architecture, implement high-performance solutions, and drive tool adoption for production designs.
Experience Level
Senior level. Title indicates principal/lead role; typically filled by an engineer with extensive EDA or semiconductor physical-design experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Architect, design, and implement EDA algorithms and tool features for physical design, timing, placement, routing, or related flows.
- Lead technical projects across multiple teams and drive delivery of production-quality tools.
- Optimize performance and scalability of tools for large, complex designs.
- Collaborate with silicon design teams to define requirements and validate tool results on real designs.
- Mentor and review work from other engineers; provide technical leadership and code reviews.
- Investigate and resolve high-impact bugs and production issues; develop regression tests and validation infrastructure.
- Document algorithms, design choices, and user-facing behavior; contribute to internal design reviews.
Requirements
Must-have and desirable skills for the role.
Must-have:
- Proven experience developing EDA tools or algorithms (physical design, timing analysis, placement, routing, optimization).
- Strong programming skills in C++ and Python; familiarity with performance profiling and optimization.
- Experience with handling large datasets and memory/performance constraints for chip-scale designs.
- Ability to define architecture, write production-quality code, and take ownership of long-lived tools.
- Strong collaboration skills to work with silicon engineers, software teams, and verification groups.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with STA, RC extraction, advanced node design challenges, or machine-learning applied to EDA.
- Familiarity with industry-standard flows and formats (LEF/DEF, Liberty, SPEF/CCS, GDSII).
- Prior leadership of cross-team technical efforts or open publications/standards contributions in EDA.
Education Requirements
Not specified.
