Job Title

Principal Board Product Engineer

Role Summary

Lead board-level product engineering from prototype through volume production for high-performance networking, AI, compute, optical, and storage products. Act as the technical interface between ASIC development, hardware design, manufacturing, test, suppliers, and operations to ensure successful product launches and production reliability.

Experience Level

Senior — typically 10+ years of relevant experience. Candidates with a Master's or PhD commonly qualify with ~5–10 years' experience per the role requirements.

Responsibilities

Drive new product introductions and manufacturing readiness; own launch metrics, factory execution, and issue resolution.

  • Lead board-level NPI activities and hardware readiness reviews (EVT, DVT, PVT, Pilot, Mass Production).
  • Manage product risks, mitigation plans, schedules, and rapid deployment/production ramps.
  • Coordinate across Hardware Design, ASIC, Test Engineering, Reliability, Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations.
  • Drive manufacturing readiness with contract manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Implement DFM, DFA, DFT and manufacturability improvements.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and corrective actions for production issues.
  • Monitor factory KPIs (e.g., first pass yield, failure rates, RMA trends) and lead yield-improvement programs.
  • Coordinate qualification of alternate suppliers and manufacturing sites.
  • Develop and deploy manufacturing and functional tests; optimize assembly and test flows.

Requirements

Key technical skills and professional experience required for successful performance in this role.

  • Must-have: 5+ years in board product engineering, NPI, manufacturing engineering, or hardware product development with experience taking complex products to high-volume manufacturing.
  • Must-have: Practical experience with PCB manufacturing, SMT assembly, manufacturing test methodologies, yield analysis, and failure analysis techniques.
  • Must-have: Experience working with contract manufacturers, component suppliers, and coordinating supplier/manufacturer qualifications.
  • Must-have: Working knowledge of PLM systems (Agile preferred) and ECO/MCO/DEV/PCN processes.
  • Must-have: Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive execution across multiple organizations.
  • Desirable: Experience with optical subassemblies, fiber-attach integration, and high-speed digital design considerations.
  • Desirable: Prior involvement in regulatory compliance and certification processes for hardware products.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (typical experience 10–15 years). Alternatively, a Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields with about 5–10 years of relevant experience. (No specific certifications were listed.)
