Job Title

Pre-Silicon Diagnostics Intern

Role Summary

Internship supporting pre-silicon diagnostics and chip-level validation for HPE Slingshot NIC and switch ASICs. Work is on a cross-functional engineering team focused on emulator-based validation, test automation, and investigating hardware/software issues.

This role is hybrid with an average expectation of 2 days per week onsite at an HPE office.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship for undergraduate students; works under guidance of experienced engineers on defined projects and assignments.

Responsibilities

Support validation and test automation activities; collaborate with architecture, design, firmware, and software teams.

  • Develop and execute chip-level validation tests for NIC and switch ASICs in emulator-based environments.
  • Create software tools, scripts, and automated tests to improve validation coverage and efficiency.
  • Analyze test results and investigate hardware and software issues discovered during validation.
  • Contribute to test infrastructure and automation projects under senior engineer guidance.
  • Document debug activities, test results, and project findings.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, team meetings, and validation discussions.
  • Complete a defined project (summer project) and present results to the engineering team.

Requirements

  • Must-have: Programming experience in Python, C++, Java, or similar (coursework, projects, or internships).
  • Must-have: Familiarity with Linux/Unix command-line environments.
  • Must-have: Understanding of computer architecture, digital logic, networking, operating systems, or embedded systems concepts.
  • Must-have: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; effective written and verbal communication in English.
  • Must-have: Ability to learn new technologies and work collaboratively on a team.
  • Preferred: Coursework or project experience in computer networking, operating systems, or digital design; exposure to FPGA, ASIC, or hardware validation concepts.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with test automation and Python scripting, experience with Git, and interest in HPC, AI infrastructure, or large-scale networking.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline (undergraduate status required).
