Power System Design Engineer
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Power System Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design, develop, and validate power systems and components for AMD reference platforms and customer production boards, including consumer and automotive applications. Collaborate with silicon, hardware, and software teams to support bring-up, debugging, and product integration.
Experience Level
Mid-level - typically requires 5+ years of relevant hands-on experience in PWM power design and power electronics in PC, consumer, telecom, or server products.
Responsibilities
The main responsibilities include power design, simulation, testing, and supporting platform bring-up and customer issue resolution.
- Design and develop power systems for reference platforms and customer boards across consumer and automotive products.
- Execute schematic design, component selection, BOM cost control, and provide PCB layout guidance.
- Create power specifications: power budgets, voltage/current requirements, and efficiency targets.
- Design and simulate DC-DC converters, voltage regulators, buck/boost topologies, and power management systems.
- Develop and execute test plans; perform circuit analysis, simulation, and validation to meet standards and safety requirements.
- Support silicon and board bring-up; debug and resolve power-related issues with silicon and cross-functional teams.
- Document technical designs and provide customer support to close critical power issues.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; nice-to-have items listed separately.
- Minimum of 5 years hands-on experience with PWM power design in PC, consumer, telecom, or server environments.
- Proven experience in power electronics design with product development, silicon and board bring-up, and debugging.
- Strong knowledge of multi-buck, buck-boost, and DC-DC topologies; power integrity, thermal design, and EMI considerations.
- Proficiency with simulation tools such as SPICE, PLECS, or MATLAB/Simulink; experience with LTspice and SIMPLIS preferred.
- Familiarity with PCB layout principles for power electronics and experience with Cadence/Allegro tools.
- Experience using power test equipment and performing power validation and characterization.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to quality and reliability, and ability to work independently on multiple projects.
- Good English reading and writing skills for cross-functional collaboration.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards (UL, IEC, IEEE).
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with HDL (VHDL or Verilog).
- Post-silicon power transient testing and platform power characterization experience.
- Automotive product experience or work with safety-critical power systems.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
