Power Management IC Design Engineer
QualcommJob Title
Power Management IC Design Engineer
Role Summary
Lead definition, circuit design, verification, and documentation for mixed-signal power management integrated circuits (PMICs), with emphasis on controller ICs and integrated high-current power stages for compute, data center, automotive, and industrial applications.
Work within the PMIC Design team to take architecture through transistor-level design, layout oversight, silicon bring-up, characterization, and production support.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical IC design experience expectation ranges from a few years to several years depending on prior training and degree (guidance: roughly 2–4+ years of relevant IC design experience).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities for this role include:
- Define IC architecture and circuit-level specifications based on product and platform requirements.
- Implement architecture via transistor-level circuit design and simulation using industry tools.
- Own design and verification strategy for assigned PMIC blocks and subsystems, including controller circuitry and high-current power stage interfaces.
- Guide and review layout implementation and perform physical and reliability verification.
- Lead silicon bring-up, run characterization tests, analyze results, and drive corrective design actions.
- Document design intent, architectural decisions, and silicon findings for complex PMIC subsystems.
- Collaborate with validation, test, and product engineering teams to support qualification and production ramp.
- Provide technical guidance and informal mentoring during design reviews and debugging activities.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items noted separately.
- Hands-on experience with circuit design and simulation tools such as Cadence ADE and Spectre, SPICE variants, and MATLAB.
- Experience with hardware description or behavioral languages (Verilog/Verilog-AMS, VHDL, SystemVerilog) for mixed-signal verification or modeling.
- Proven track record in analog, mixed-signal, or power-management IC design, including controller circuits and power-stage interfaces.
- Knowledge in one or more of: power electronics (switch-mode and linear), control theory, multiphase buck controllers, high-accuracy analog front ends, high-speed/high-drive circuits, precision references, electro-migration/transistor reliability, or behavioral modeling.
- Experience interpreting simulation and silicon characterization data and driving design fixes across PVT and operating conditions.
- Ability to guide layout engineers, perform physical verification checks, and consider reliability/EM constraints.
- Strong technical communication and documentation skills; ability to present complex technical information to varied audiences.
- Preferred: deeper experience (>3 years) in PMIC or mixed-signal IC design and verification techniques.
Education Requirements
One of the following education/experience paths is expected: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering plus ~4+ years relevant IC design experience; OR Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field plus ~2+ years relevant IC design experience; OR PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Posting references "related field" and allows academic and/or work experience equivalence for relevant tool and design experience.
