Power Integrity Engineer
LightmatterJob Title
Power Integrity Engineer
Role Summary
Member of the Signal Integrity, Power Integrity and Packaging team responsible for defining and validating power delivery network (PDN) solutions from concept through lab bring-up for Lightmatter products.
The role focuses on PDN design and analysis across digital, analog and photonics domains, influencing package and system architecture to meet stringent power integrity goals.
Experience Level
Mid-level — typically requires 3+ years of experience in power delivery and power integrity analysis for high-performance CPUs and compute SoCs.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include design, simulation, measurement, and cross-team integration to ensure PDN performance.
- Design and analyze PDNs for digital and analog SoC domains, including the path from voltage regulators to on-chip decoupling.
- Model regulator behavior (switching ripple, transient response) to inform component selection.
- Use EM and other commercial tools to extract PCB/package impedance and create N-port models.
- Perform time-domain and frequency-domain simulations to assess supply rail behavior (droop, overshoot, stability).
- Conduct lab measurements to validate designs, using programmable loads and oscilloscopes to capture transients.
- Collaborate with hardware designers, layout engineers, and system integrators to implement PDN improvements and verify results.
- Participate in design reviews and document analysis, test procedures, and recommendations.
- Monitor and review PDN constraints during layout and provide simulation- or measurement-based feedback.
- Support system-level tradeoff studies and architectural evaluations related to power integrity.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.
- Minimum 3 years experience in power delivery and power integrity analysis for high-performance CPUs or compute SoCs.
- Proficiency with power-integrity simulation and analysis tools such as PowerSI, PowerDC, IDEM, H-Spice, and Keysight ADS.
- Experience in DC-DC converter design and regulator characterization.
- Practical knowledge of PCB power/layout considerations: layer stack-up, power plane partitioning, decoupling capacitor selection/placement, microvia and PTH considerations.
- Hands-on lab experience capturing transient response and validating PDN behavior (oscilloscopes, programmable loads, relevant measurement techniques).
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills for power-integrity issues.
- Ability to comply with U.S. export control laws and related requirements.
Nice-to-have:
- Working knowledge of 2D/2.5D/3D packaging technologies and associated PDN challenges.
- Familiarity with network analyzers and other RF/PI lab equipment.
- Experience scripting for automation and post-processing (Skill, TCL, Python, MATLAB).
Education Requirements
M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
