PMTS Silicon Photonics Device Engineer

Role Summary

This role leads development, simulation, qualification and test of active and passive silicon photonics devices. The engineer coordinates across integration, reliability, modeling and test teams and provides technical support to customers to resolve technology vs. design issues.

Experience Level

Senior - experience expectation depends on degree: typically 7+ years (Ph.D.) up to 11+ years (B.S.) of relevant silicon photonics/device experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include designing and qualifying silicon photonic devices and supporting customer evaluations.

  • Lead development of passive and active silicon photonics components to meet customer and technology requirements.
  • Simulate, design and coordinate testing of new silicon photonic devices.
  • Plan, coordinate and document qualification activities for new photonic devices.
  • Identify technical issues, design experiments to determine root cause, and propose process/design improvements.
  • Interface with customers to evaluate solutions and debug technology vs. design challenges.
  • Coordinate across cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
  • Adhere to Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.
  • Travel less than 10% to other GF facilities as needed.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience (summary):

  • Hands-on experience with silicon photonics device simulation, design, and test.
  • Experience with device integration, test and advanced packaging workflows.
  • Proven ability to coordinate qualification and testing activities across teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to support customer-facing technical discussions.
  • Collaborative, proactive mindset and strong cross-organizational coordination skills.
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal).

Nice-to-have:

  • Silicon photonic modulator design experience (BTO or TFLN).
  • Experience using GlobalFoundries silicon photonic PDKs.
  • Advanced silicon photonic simulation expertise.
  • Project management and strong planning/organizational skills.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Materials Science, Photonics or a related technical field. Experience minima per degree: B.S. +11 years, M.S. +8 years, Ph.D. +7 years; or equivalent practical experience.
