PMIC Reference HW Design Engineer
QualcommJob Title
PMIC Reference HW Design Engineer
Role Summary
Lead the design and optimization of PMIC PCBs and customer reference boards for Qualcomm chipset-based phone designs. Deliver schematics, PCB layouts, BOM selections, thermal solutions, and published design guidelines for test platforms and reference designs.
Experience Level
Mid-level: typically 3β7 years of relevant hardware/PCB design experience.
Responsibilities
The role will:
- Design customer reference boards and evaluation kits for PMICs, balancing performance and cost.
- Develop and publish PMIC PCB design guidelines, schematics, BOM recommendations, and PCB layouts in coordination with CAD engineers.
- Collaborate with PMIC IC designers, test hardware platform teams, and CAD to optimize designs for manufacturability and cost.
- Perform board-level Power Integrity (PI) and Signal Integrity (SI) simulations to review and approve hardware designs.
- Characterize components and publish performance- and cost-optimized reference BOM lists.
- Provide thermal solutions and review hardware from various test teams to ensure platform readiness.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Experience with IC design and PCB design tools; familiarity using SPICE and MATLAB.
- Practical experience with Verilog/VHDL, C, or Python for hardware validation and automation (as used in test platforms).
- Hands-on use of lab equipment: oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, logic analyzer, etc.
- Knowledge of power management PCB design, component selection, and CAD interfaces.
- Understanding of Signal Integrity and Power Integrity issues and ability to use simulators such as powerSI, SIWave, or Ansys.
- Familiarity with high layer count multilayer PCBs (6/8/10 layers) and practical layout considerations for power systems.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience optimizing BOMs for cost/performance tradeoffs and publishing reference BOMs.
- Experience developing evaluation kits and working directly with handset/test-platform validation teams.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 5 years of relevant experience; Master's degree with 4 years; or PhD with 2 years of relevant experience. (Fields referenced: Electrical Engineering or related technical disciplines.)
