Job Title

PIC Process & Integration Engineer

Role Summary

Drive integration of silicon photonic device fabrication into foundry partners by planning and executing specialty process development and nanofabrication trials, then supporting transfer of qualified processes. Work on silicon-photonics optical engines for AI and data-center infrastructure as part of a cross-functional engineering team based in Adliswil, Switzerland.

Experience Level

Mid-level — the role expects at least 3 years of relevant hands-on cleanroom and process experience.

Responsibilities

Key day-to-day responsibilities include process development, device characterization, and cross-team coordination for technology integration and tape-out readiness.

  • Plan and execute specialty process development and nanofabrication trials in the cleanroom; support process transfer to foundry partners.
  • Document processes and write reproducible specifications for handover.
  • Provide design rules, process limitations, manufacturability guidance, and DFM input to design teams; prepare designs for tape-out including DRC sign-off and waiver management.
  • Support yield improvement through design–process co-optimization; lead excursion investigations and containment with lab and external partners.
  • Analyze device processing results versus simulation, identify root causes, and translate findings into concrete design and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with design, verification, operations, and foundry partners; communicate technical results to program leadership.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience followed by valuable additions.

  • Must-have: Solid grounding in integrated photonics device physics, optical component design, semiconductor fabrication processes, and device testing.
  • Must-have: 3+ years hands-on cleanroom experience with lithography, dry/wet etching, thin-film deposition, and metrology.
  • Must-have: Experience with PIC design, layout and simulations.
  • Must-have: Strong problem-solving skills, self-starting attitude, and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Must-have: English proficiency required; German is a plus.
  • Must-have: This position may require eligibility to access export-controlled information under applicable U.S. export control laws.
  • Nice-to-have: Proficiency in photonic simulation tools (e.g., Lumerical) and code-based PIC layout tools (e.g., Synopsys).
  • Nice-to-have: Experience working with external PDKs and design-rule frameworks; tape-out support or foundry logistics experience.
  • Nice-to-have: Hands-on experience with optical device characterization and testing; deep understanding of advanced foundry process nodes.

Education Requirements

Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, or a related technical field.
