Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Own the physical design flow for deep sub-micron IC logic, VLSI, and ASIC custom designs across mobile, IoT, and server segments. Deliver floorplanning, placement, power planning, signoff validation, and automation to produce tape-out ready designs.

Experience Level

Mid-level — typically requires around 3+ years of relevant VLSI/ASIC physical design experience.

Responsibilities

Lead and execute physical implementation and validation tasks across digital and analog blocks.

• Perform floor planning, power planning, placement, and routing for digital and analog blocks.
• Run physical verification and signoff activities including static timing analysis and noise analysis.
• Conduct power grid characterization and related analysis using industry-standard tools.
• Troubleshoot physical design issues and implement design changes to meet timing, power, and signal integrity goals.
• Automate design flows and perform quality analysis of design collateral and deliverables.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and practical experience.

• 3+ years of hands-on VLSI/ASIC physical design experience.
• Proficiency with Cadence Virtuoso, HSPICE, and ADE for custom block development and verification.
• Experience building custom digital blocks using Cadence Virtuoso and related flows.
• Working knowledge of physical design tools and methodologies such as Primetime, StarRC, and Redhawk.
• Scripting experience for flow automation using Python, TCL, or Perl.
• Strong understanding of VLSI, ASIC design methodology, and circuit design concepts.
• Ability to diagnose integration issues across timing, power, and signal integrity domains.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 3+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience.
