Job Title
Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Work on the physical implementation of complex ASICs, leading layout, place-and-route, timing closure, and power analysis from RTL/synthesis handoff through signoff. The role leads projects, coordinates cross-functional teams, and drives delivery of production silicon.
Experience Level
Senior. Typical experience guidance in the posting: Bachelor's degree + 8+ years, Master's degree + 6+ years, or PhD + 3+ years.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include ownership of physical-design flow and technical leadership on projects.
- Define and execute physical design methodology: floorplanning, placement, routing, timing closure, and power optimization.
- Evaluate and optimize the full flow from high-level design and synthesis to P&R and timing signoff.
- Analyze trade-offs across timing, power, and area to meet project targets.
- Lead design teams and cross-functional coordination; act as escalation point for complex issues.
- Coach and mentor junior engineers; drive process improvements and project delivery.
- Perform experimental tests and analyze results to validate design and process choices.
Requirements
Must-have technical and leadership skills required to perform effectively in this role.
- Proven experience in ASIC physical design including P&R, timing closure, and power analysis.
- Broad understanding of the end-to-end ASIC implementation flow and ability to evaluate process/EDA tool impacts.
- Strong project management and team leadership skills; experience driving complex projects to completion.
- Analytical problem-solving skills and ability to select appropriate methods and trade-offs for complex issues.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and coordinating with verification, synthesis, and backend teams.
- Scripting or automation experience (e.g., TCL, Python) to improve flows and productivity.
Education Requirements
Posting specifies degree-based experience combinations: Bachelor's degree with 8+ years of related experience; Master's degree with 6+ years; or PhD with 3+ years. The posting does not list specific fields of study or certifications.
