Job Title

Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Implement high-performance physical design blocks for Tenstorrent's CPU and AI/ML architectures, owning the full implementation flow from synthesis through tapeout. Collaborate with RTL, architecture, IP, verification, and tooling teams to meet performance, power, and area targets on advanced process nodes.

Hybrid position based in Austin, TX; Santa Clara, CA; or Fort Collins, CO.

Experience Level

Mid-level (Level - Mid-Career). Tenstorrent considers candidates across experience ranges; final level and offer will be determined during interviews.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include end-to-end physical implementation and PPA optimization.

  • Lead synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure for complex SOC/ASIC blocks through tapeout.
  • Develop and tune implementation flows to meet performance, power, and area targets.
  • Collaborate with RTL architects, IP owners, and verification teams to resolve cross-hierarchy issues.
  • Drive physical design requirements from early architecture stages through final signoff.
  • Debug timing, power, and signal integrity issues across hierarchies and tools.
  • Automate and script flows to accelerate iterations and improve reliability.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and practical experience.

  • Proven tapeout experience with synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure on taped-out designs.
  • Expertise with industry-standard tools such as FusionCompiler, PrimeTime, and RedHawk.
  • Proficient in scripting for automation and debugging (Tcl, Perl, Python).
  • Deep understanding of advanced-node challenges and low-power design techniques (power gating, multi-Vt, voltage scaling).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and experience debugging complex cross-hierarchy issues.
  • Nice-to-have: experience with chiplet architectures, flow development, and signoff methodologies.

Education Requirements

BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
