Physical Design Engineer
BroadcomJob Title
Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Engineer responsible for block- and chip-level physical design and delivery for SoC projects. Work includes floorplanning, partitioning, placement, clock tree synthesis, routing, physical verification and timing closure for advanced process nodes.
Work with cross-functional teams to implement ECOs, automate flows, and meet quality and turnaround-time targets for silicon tapeout.
Experience Level
Senior-level engineering role. The job specifies 10+ years (MSEE/MSCS) or 12+ years (BSEE/BSCS) of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Perform layout and physical implementation for blocks and SoC top, including floorplanning, partitioning and placement.
- Drive clock tree synthesis, routing, extraction, and physical verification to support timing closure.
- Implement timing and functional ECOs and support static timing analysis (STA) closure.
- Integrate top-down and bottom-up physical design flows for SoC designs at 5nm and below.
- Develop and adapt automation flows to improve turnaround time and ensure repeatability.
- Collaborate across sites and time zones with multi-functional teams to deliver right-first-time silicon.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- Deep understanding of backend digital design and physical design flow (P&R, extraction, PV, STA).
- Proficiency with backend EDA tools such as Genus, Innovus, Quantus, Tempus; DC/Star-RCXT/PT; PrimeRail/Voltus; Redhawk; and equivalent Cadence/Synopsys/Mentor tools for P&R, PV, STA, ECO.
- Strong scripting and automation skills; proficiency in Tcl and Perl. Ability to build and adapt automation flows.
- Experience executing timing and physical constraints and driving STA closure for SoC tops.
- Proven analytical skills and ability to collaborate in multi-site, cross-time-zone environments.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with advanced process nodes (5nm and below) and SoC-level physical integration.
Education Requirements
Required: MSEE or MSCS with 10+ years of experience, or BSEE or BSCS with 12+ years of experience. Fields: Electrical Engineering or Computer Science (or closely related technical fields). No certifications specified; equivalent industry experience is implied by the years-of-experience guidance.
