Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
The Physical Design Engineer will take designs from netlist to GDSII, owning floorplanning through signoff on production silicon programs and working directly with customer implementation teams.
You will also evaluate AI-generated floorplans and implementation decisions to help Voltai's tooling learn expert physical-design practices.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The role expects approximately 5+ years of physical design experience with multiple production tapeouts.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include delivering physical implementation and improving automation and flows.
- Own block-level and full-chip physical implementation: floorplanning, placement, clock tree synthesis, and routing.
- Drive timing, power, and congestion closure in coordination with synthesis and STA teams.
- Resolve physical verification (DRC/LVS) and power integrity (IR drop, EM) issues for signoff.
- Build and improve place-and-route flows, scripts, and automation.
- Evaluate AI-generated floorplans and define metrics for implementation quality.
- Collaborate directly with customer teams to solve implementation challenges.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience followed by concise nice-to-have items.
- 5+ years of physical design experience with multiple production tapeouts.
- Deep experience with Innovus or Fusion Compiler/ICC2.
- Strong understanding of timing closure, clock tree synthesis, and power distribution networks.
- Experience at advanced process nodes (7nm and below).
- Proficient in Tcl and Python scripting for flow automation.
Nice-to-have
- Full-chip integration or hierarchical design experience.
- Experience with high-speed interfaces or low-power design flows.
- Interest or experience in applying AI/ML to physical design problems.
