Job Title

Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

As a Physical Design Engineer on Intel's custom IP and SoC teams, you will implement RTL-to-GDS physical design flows, optimize for power/performance/area, and deliver design databases ready for manufacturing. The role works cross-functionally with verification, CAD, and architecture teams to meet timing, power, and manufacturability goals.

This position contributes directly to product performance and efficiency through practical design implementation and flow automation.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Typical requirement: ~3+ years of relevant physical design experience (see Education Requirements for degree-based experience options).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include implementation, verification, and flow improvement:

  • Execute RTL-to-GDS physical implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, placement, routing, clock tree synthesis, and timing closure.
  • Perform signoff activities: static timing analysis, formal equivalence checks, power integrity analysis, and layout verification.
  • Analyze and resolve timing, reliability, and design-structure violations.
  • Optimize designs for power, performance, and area using industry-standard EDA tools.
  • Develop and maintain physical design methodologies and automation scripts/flows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address integration and manufacturability issues.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, legal and language requirements; preferred items noted separately.

  • Hands-on RTL-to-GDS implementation experience (synthesis, place & route, timing closure).
  • Proficiency with industry EDA tools for physical design (examples: Cadence, Mentor Graphics).
  • Experience with static timing analysis, floorplanning, and power integrity analysis.
  • Knowledge of low-power design techniques and PPA optimization.
  • Experience developing or improving physical design methodologies and automation.
  • Advanced English communication skills.
  • Unrestricted, permanent right to work in Mexico (no visa sponsorship available).

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience driving continuous improvement in design flows and automation.
  • Demonstrated execution and attention to detail in complex designs.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field with 3+ years of experience; OR Master's degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or a related field with 2+ years of experience; OR PhD in Electrical/Computer Engineering or a related field (may qualify with no prior experience).
