Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Implement physical design for custom IP and SoC designs from RTL to GDS to produce manufacturing-ready design databases. Work within Intel Central Engineering Group to enable product and custom ASIC customer deliveries by performing implementation, verification, and signoff tasks across the physical design flow.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience in physical design execution.

Responsibilities

Deliver physical implementation, verification, and closure for custom IP and SoC designs:

• Execute RTL-to-GDS flow: synthesis, placement and routing, clock tree synthesis, floorplanning, and routing.
• Perform static timing analysis, timing closure, and timing-driven optimization.
• Design and analyze power/clock distribution, perform power and noise analysis, and handle multi-power-domain issues.
• Conduct verification and signoff: formal equivalence verification, layout verification, electrical rule checks, and reliability checks.
• Analyze results and propose corrective actions to fix timing, power, and other violations.
• Optimize designs for power, performance, and area (PPA).
• Contribute to development and automation of physical design methodologies and flows.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills:

• Deep knowledge of RTL-to-GDS workflows, including synthesis, place-and-route, and static timing analysis.
• Expertise in PPA optimization and timing closure techniques.
• Hands-on experience with industry-standard EDA tools for physical design and verification.
• Strong understanding of clock tree synthesis and low-power design techniques.
• Experience with floorplanning methodologies and multi-power-domain analysis.
• Ability to analyze implementation results and recommend fixes to meet design targets.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience collaborating across cross-functional teams on SoC or IP projects.
• Experience improving or automating physical design flows and methodologies.
• Strong critical thinking, communication, and organizational skills.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field. The posting specifies a minimum of 2+ years of experience in physical design execution.
