Job Title
Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join Intel's Central Engineering Group to implement physical design for custom IP and SoC projects. The role translates RTL into manufacturing-ready GDS databases and supports signoff to enable product delivery.
Experience Level
Mid-level β typically 3β7 years of relevant physical design experience.
Responsibilities
Implement and verify physical design flows and improve design methodology.
- Execute RTL-to-GDS physical implementation: synthesis, place-and-route, clock tree synthesis, floorplanning, and routing.
- Perform verification and signoff tasks: static timing analysis, formal equivalence checks, power and noise analysis, layout verification, and electrical rule checking.
- Analyze results, identify violations, and recommend corrective actions for current and future architectures.
- Optimize designs for power, performance and area (PPA).
- Work on multi-power-domain designs and low-power implementation techniques.
- Contribute to automation and improvement of physical design methodologies and flows.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred interpersonal skills listed separately.
- Deep knowledge of RTL-to-GDS workflows, including synthesis, place-and-route, and static timing analysis.
- Expertise in PPA optimization techniques for complex digital designs.
- Hands-on experience with industry-standard EDA tools for physical design and verification.
- Strong knowledge of clock tree synthesis and low-power design techniques.
- Experience with timing closure, floorplanning methodologies, and multi-power-domain analysis.
- Experience with signoff activities: timing, power integrity, and layout/electrical verification.
- Ability to analyze results and drive fixes across design and verification teams.
- Preferred: demonstrated collaboration across cross-functional teams, strong problem-solving, and clear communication skills.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field with 5+ years of physical design execution experience; OR Master's degree in a related field with 3+ years of physical design execution experience. (Fields listed in source: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, related technical fields.)
