Job Title
Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
The Physical Design Engineer designs and delivers complex ASIC/IC layouts, leading physical implementation from synthesis through place-and-route, timing closure, and power optimization. The role leads major projects, mentors junior engineers, and coordinates across logic, verification and manufacturing teams.
Experience Level
Senior β typically requires 8+ years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include leading physical design efforts for ASICs and driving project delivery.
- Define and implement physical architecture, floorplans, and timing/power optimization strategies.
- Manage synthesis, place-and-route, timing closure, ECOs, and signoff flows.
- Perform timing, power and signal integrity analysis and debug across corners and modes.
- Collaborate with logic, verification, DFT and PD teams to define module interfaces and deliverables.
- Lead and coordinate complex projects; escalate and resolve technical issues and vendor interactions.
- Coach and mentor junior engineers; review designs and promote best practices.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience, plus a few desirable qualifications.
- 8+ years of ASIC physical design experience, including synthesis, place-and-route, timing closure and power analysis.
- Hands-on experience with signoff flows and common EDA tools for P&R, STA, extraction, and power analysis.
- Strong debugging skills across RTL-to-GDSII flow and familiarity with timing, congestion and ECO methodologies.
- Proficient in scripting for automation (Python, Tcl, Perl or similar).
- Proven project management and leadership experience driving cross-functional teams and delivering products.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; able to influence technical decisions and priorities.
- Nice-to-have: experience evaluating vendors, multi-technology design exposure, or post-graduate coursework.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree required; post-graduate coursework or advanced study is desirable. (Field of study not specified.)
