Photonics Circuit Designer
Role Summary
Design, model, simulate, and analyze high-performance integrated photonic circuits for a silicon-photonics-based quantum computer. Work on photonic device modeling, circuit-level simulation, layout coordination, and data-driven performance analysis within a cross-functional hardware team.
Experience Level
Mid-level (approximately 5 years of relevant academic or industry experience in integrated photonics).
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include circuit and device modeling, simulation, layout coordination, and data analysis to validate photonic circuits.
- Develop data-driven models of linear photonic devices at multiple scales using diverse methods.
- Design and optimize integrated photonic circuits for target performance metrics.
- Perform full electromagnetic and system-level simulation, including photon-pair generation modeling (e.g., spontaneous four-wave mixing).
- Create schematic representations of photonic circuits and coordinate layout execution.
- Analyze measurement and simulation data to evaluate device and circuit performance.
- Collaborate with component design and characterization teams to validate designs.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, experience, and competencies.
- Approximately 5 years of relevant work or academic research experience in integrated photonics.
- In-depth knowledge of photonic devices, performance metrics, and testing techniques.
- Extensive experience using commercial photonic design and electromagnetic simulation tools.
- Experience with integrated photonic circuit layout and coordinating layouts with foundry processes.
- Strong software skills for simulation, circuit definition, and data analysis, especially Python for scientific applications and data manipulation.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Nice-to-have: experience with the Wolfram Language.
Education Requirements
PhD or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or Physics.
