Optical Test Engineer
Role Summary
The Optical Test Engineer validates and ensures quality of photonic components, modules, and systems through hands-on testing, test development, and reporting. The role supports new product introduction (NPI) and volume manufacturing and works closely with optical design, hardware, and manufacturing teams.
Experience Level
Senior β 8+ years industry experience preferred.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include characterization, test execution, data analysis, and supporting production ramp.
- Perform characterization and testing of fiber-optic components and modules.
- Design, plan, and conduct optical and fiber testing on components, devices, and systems.
- Analyze test results to verify compliance with performance specifications and quality standards.
- Maintain accurate, detailed records of test procedures, setups, and outcomes.
- Generate comprehensive test reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Support troubleshooting and root-cause analysis to resolve product issues.
- Develop and maintain test procedures and test automation scripts.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support NPI and manufacturing ramp.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for successful performance in this role.
- Must-have: Hands-on experience with optical test instruments (optical spectrum analyzers, power meters, polarization controllers, bit-error-rate testers).
- Must-have: Proven experience testing fiber-optic components and modules and performing calibration/characterization activities.
- Must-have: Ability to analyze complex test data, troubleshoot hardware issues, and perform root-cause analysis.
- Must-have: Experience writing or adapting automation scripts (Python, LabVIEW, Visual Basic; shell scripting is a plus).
- Must-have: Strong documentation and communication skills; able to produce test reports and train peers.
- Nice-to-have: Prior exposure to photonics, telecom, or high-speed networking systems.
- Nice-to-have: Experience supporting NPI and manufacturing ramp in a production environment.
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related technical field. The posting indicates 8+ years of industry experience is preferred.
