Job Title

Optical Packaging Engineer

Role Summary

Work on hands-on development and manufacturing of fiber-coupled optical packages for photonic chips. The role supports process development, validation, and production readiness within the optical packaging and operations teams.

Typical tasks include assembly, alignment, test, data collection, and cross-functional troubleshooting to improve yield and optical performance.

Experience Level

Entry-level — typically 1–3 years of relevant experience in semiconductor packaging, photonics, optics, or advanced manufacturing (internships and research experience considered).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include hands-on assembly, process validation, and supporting NPI activities.

  • Manufacture and assemble fiber-to-chip packaged assemblies and optical modules.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate optical packaging and active alignment processes.
  • Execute experiments, collect data, and analyze results to improve coupling efficiency, process stability, and yield.
  • Characterize processes including alignment, adhesive curing, and optical performance testing.
  • Support NPI by documenting processes, creating work instructions, and preparing assemblies for production.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing and reliability issues using structured problem-solving methods.
  • Set up, calibrate, qualify, and maintain optical assembly equipment and metrology tools.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, test, reliability, and vendor teams to evaluate materials and tooling.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; followed by useful but optional qualifications.

  • Must-have: 1–3 years relevant experience in semiconductor packaging, photonics, optics, or advanced manufacturing environments (including internships or research).
  • Basic understanding of optical alignment, fiber optics, and optical measurement techniques.
  • Hands-on laboratory or manufacturing experience with precision assemblies and metrology tools.
  • Exposure to semiconductor assembly, precision alignment systems, or automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced development setting; good verbal and written communication for cross-functional work.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing process data (Excel, JMP, MATLAB, or Python).
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with photonic integrated circuit (PIC) packaging or optical module assembly.
  • Understanding of statistical process control (SPC), DOE, or basic yield analysis concepts.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related technical field; internships or equivalent practical experience (research, co-op) may be considered in lieu of degree. No specific certifications required.
