Optical Module Software/Firmware Intern

Role Summary

Internship supporting Field Application Engineering (FAE) activities for optical modules. The intern will assist senior FAEs and the U.S. application team with firmware/software support, lab bring-up, debugging, and performance optimization for PAM4 and coherent optical technologies.

Work is performed onsite at Marvell offices in Wuhan or Shanghai/Suzhou and emphasizes hands-on lab and firmware tasks under engineer supervision.

Experience Level

Entry-level / Internship. Candidates should be available for a 4–6 month minimum commitment.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities during the internship include customer support, lab test automation, and firmware assistance.

  • Support customer module firmware/software development with guidance from senior FAEs.
  • Develop equipment control scripts and lab automation utilities.
  • Assist with product bring-up and evaluation: software setup, TX/RX performance testing, issue reproduction and reporting.
  • Perform image flashing, configuration, register access, and status/log collection over I2C/MDIO.
  • Join customer support sessions (onsite or remote) to assist debugging and issue resolution.
  • Support module control/management features and compliance checks (examples: CMIS 5.x, 8636).
  • Contribute to technical documentation, FAQs, and internal training materials.
  • Learn and use internal software tools for development, analysis, and debugging.

Requirements

Key skills and conditions needed for the role.

  • Proficient in C and Python; able to write small utilities and read/modify embedded code.
  • Practical experience or interest in lab test equipment and automation.
  • Familiarity with DCA, BERT, or similar test equipment is a strong advantage.
  • Knowledge of signal and power integrity is a plus.
  • Experience with simulation tools such as ADS or HFSS is desirable.
  • Strong communication skills, collaborative mindset, and willingness to learn.
  • Availability to commit at least 4–6 months or more.
  • May require eligibility to access export-controlled technology; candidates may be subject to export license review.
  • Candidates must follow interview integrity rules specified by the employer (no use of unauthorized AI tools during interviews).

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Masters degree in Software, Computer Science, Electronics/Electrical/Control Engineering or a related field.
