Optical Manufacturing Test Engineer - Software Automation

Role Summary

Lumilens builds photonics infrastructure for high-performance computing. This role focuses on test automation and validation of photonic components, modules, and systems for new product introduction (NPI) and volume manufacturing.

The engineer will design, develop, and maintain Python-based test frameworks, use traffic generators (e.g., IXIA) to validate Layer 1 and Layer 2 behavior, integrate test software with manufacturing systems and cloud monitoring, and work cross-functionally with design, hardware, and manufacturing teams to drive yield and quality improvements.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include ownership of manufacturing test software and execution across NPI and volume manufacturing.

  • Develop, maintain, and execute automated test cases and frameworks (Python) for manufacturing testers.
  • Perform functional, regression, and performance testing of Layer 1 and Layer 2 network systems; validate hardware/software integration with optical interfaces and switches.
  • Configure and operate traffic generators (e.g., IXIA) to simulate network environments and measure performance.
  • Own test software change control, revision tracking, regression testing, and tester updates under QMS processes.
  • Analyze test data, generate comprehensive reports, and drive yield/cycle-time improvements.
  • Troubleshoot failures, perform root cause analysis, and collaborate with engineers to implement corrective actions.
  • Integrate test software with databases and cloud monitoring/reporting tools for production analytics.
  • Support qualification testing and ensure DFM/DFT guidelines are met in collaboration with process and design teams.
  • Create troubleshooting guides, automated utilities, and templates for manufacturing test operations.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience to perform the role effectively.

  • Hands-on experience in software testing and test automation for optical transceiver products and silicon photonics (manufacturing context).
  • Strong Python skills for test automation; experience with unit and integration testing.
  • Practical knowledge of Layer 1 and Layer 2 networking protocols and experience with traffic generators (IXIA) and network switches.
  • Experience with hardware communication protocols: NI-VISA, SCPI, RS-232, TCP/IP.
  • Database integration experience and data analysis skills (SQL); ability to work with test data and statistics for yield analysis.
  • Experience with SPC, GR&R, tester correlation and manufacturing quality reporting.
  • Proficiency with version control systems and workflows (GitHub, Bitbucket, SVN).
  • Familiarity with QMS, change control, and production test ownership processes.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-functional communication skills; able to train and mentor peers.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as required.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with C#, LabVIEW, Visual Basic, Windows Forms or WPF.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases, shell scripting, and additional automation tooling.
  • Prior experience testing transceiver modules at 400G, 800G, 1.6T or similar data rates.

Education Requirements

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field plus approximately 7 years of hands-on experience in software testing and test automation of optical transceiver products (including silicon photonics). Preferred experience includes testing at high data rates (400G/800G/1.6T) and manufacturing/test-focused statistical methods.
