Job Title
Open Source Software Engineer — ML Systems & AMD Hardware
Role Summary
Build and optimize machine learning systems and open source integrations that run efficiently on AMD GPUs. Work across ML frameworks, inference systems, and low-level GPU kernels to improve performance, correctness, and upstream adoption.
This role sits at the intersection of open source AI software, GPU systems, and high-performance computing and involves shipping contributions to public projects as well as internal engineering work.
Experience Level
Mid-level (Level - Mid-Career). Typical candidates have multiple years of systems or GPU-related software engineering experience; the posting does not specify exact years.
Responsibilities
Deliver code, performance improvements, and infrastructure that enable ML/LLM workloads on AMD hardware and upstream projects.
- Develop and maintain open source integrations between ML/AI software and AMD hardware.
- Optimize kernels and critical execution paths for AMD GPUs; implement kernel fusions and pipelined execution.
- Profile workloads, identify bottlenecks, and implement measurable performance improvements.
- Adapt implementations across different kernel programming languages and GPU environments.
- Work with LLM inference systems to optimize model architecture, data layout, quantization, and execution strategy.
- Contribute high-quality code upstream to relevant open source projects and participate in code reviews.
- Write comprehensive unit, integration, and performance tests and build automated testing/validation infrastructure.
- Investigate and resolve correctness and performance issues across software and hardware layers.
- Document implementations, performance characteristics, and technical decisions for other developers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and practices required to perform the role.
- Proven familiarity with LLM systems, inference workloads, and performance optimization for ML workloads.
- Experience optimizing GPU kernels, preferably for AMD architectures.
- Strong systems-level programming ability and understanding of GPU execution, kernel fusion, and pipelined execution.
- Understanding of performance tradeoffs across compute, memory bandwidth, synchronization, and data movement.
- Familiarity with open source development: code review, automated testing, CI, and upstream contributions.
- Ability to work across the stack from ML frameworks to low-level kernels and to learn new kernel languages and programming models.
- Nice-to-have: experience with vLLM, SGLang, llama.cpp, ROCm, CUDA, Vulkan/SPIR-V, quantized models, or contributing to large open source projects.
Education Requirements
Preferred: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field. Equivalent professional experience demonstrating strong systems programming, GPU computing, ML infrastructure, and open source engineering will also be considered.
