Job Title

Hardware Physical Design / VLSI Intern (2027)

Role Summary

This is a 12-week, full-time hardware physical design / VLSI internship on NVIDIA's hardware teams. Interns complete hands-on projects that contribute to physical implementation, timing closure, power integrity, and verification efforts for chip designs.

Work involves using industry EDA tools and scripts to implement, analyze, and optimize physical design flows under mentorship from experienced engineers.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship for current university students; 12-week full-time commitment during the internship period.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Contribute to floorplanning, placement, routing, and timing closure tasks.
  • Run and validate analyses such as STA, IR drop/power integrity, and DRC/LVS checks.
  • Develop or adapt scripts and small tools to automate parts of the physical-design flow.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate design changes and close issues.
  • Analyze results, document findings, and present recommendations or status updates.
  • Support verification and correlation tasks such as RC extraction and layout-versus-schematic checks.

Requirements

Key technical and logistical requirements.

  • Must-have: Availability full-time for the 12-week internship; coursework or hands-on experience in VLSI, digital design, or physical design methodologies; familiarity with Linux and basic scripting or programming.
  • Must-have: Ability to learn and use industry EDA tools and follow established physical design flows.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with EDA tool suites (Synopsys, Cadence, Mentor), and familiarity with tools such as Innovus, ICC2, PrimeTime, Design Compiler, Virtuoso.
  • Nice-to-have: Programming or scripting experience in Python, TCL, Perl, C/C++, SKILL, Scheme, or Make; prior projects in timing/power analysis or CAD tool development.

Education Requirements

Must be actively enrolled in a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field for the full duration of the internship. Anticipated graduation month and year must be indicated on the resume.
