Job Title

NVIDIA 2027 Internships: Hardware Physical Design / VLSI

Role Summary

12-week, full-time internship within NVIDIA's Hardware Physical Design / VLSI teams. Interns work on physical design and back-end implementation tasks that contribute to chip tape-out and validation.

Projects are hands-on and aim to deliver measurable results using commercial EDA tools and internal flows while collaborating with cross-functional design teams. NVIDIA is an equal opportunity employer.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship for students; designed for current university students available full time for the duration of the 12-week program.

Responsibilities

Intern projects will be practical and focused on physical design, verification, and tool/flow development. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Execute physical design tasks: floorplanning, place & route, clock tree synthesis, and timing closure.
  • Perform static timing analysis, power and IR-drop analysis, and back-end verification (DRC/LVS).
  • Develop, test, and improve CAD/physical-design flows and automation scripts.
  • Run and correlate RC extraction, synthesis, and timing tools; assist in tool validation and debugging.
  • Collaborate with RTL designers, verification, and manufacturing teams to resolve implementation issues.
  • Document methodology, results, and present findings to mentors and team members.

Requirements

Core technical skills and logistical requirements.

  • Availability to work full-time for the full 12-week internship period.
  • Practical coursework or project experience in VLSI design, digital/microelectronics, or CAD methodologies.
  • Familiarity with EDA tool workflows and the ability to run and interpret reports from commercial tools.
  • Programming and scripting skills (examples: Python, TCL, Perl, C/C++); comfortable with Linux environments.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills; ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Nice-to-have: prior exposure to Innovus, ICC2, PrimeTime, Design Compiler, Virtuoso, SeaHawk, SKILL, or experience developing tool flows.

Education Requirements

Must be actively enrolled and pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field for the full duration of the internship. Anticipated graduation date (month and year) must be indicated on the resume or CV.
