Job Title
Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuit Design Engineer – Power Electronics
Role Summary
Design and deliver analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits operating across low-voltage and high-voltage domains (up to ~200 V) for automated biological synthesis systems. The role partners closely with electrochemistry, microfluidics, layout, and validation teams to produce production-ready silicon with an emphasis on reliability and device-level constraints.
Location: San Diego, CA office. Work includes lab and instrumentation environments and requires on-site presence for silicon bring-up and characterization.
Experience Level
Mid-level — requires a minimum of 5+ years of relevant IC design experience (industry experience preferred).
Responsibilities
Primary engineering responsibilities for architecture, implementation, and silicon validation.
- Define system and circuit requirements with multidisciplinary teams (electrochemistry, microfluidics, systems).
- Architect and design analog/mixed-signal circuits spanning LV and HV domains; select appropriate technology node.
- Design high-voltage drivers, level shifters, domain isolation, bias/reference, sensing, protection, and reliability structures in HV/BCD processes.
- Create schematics, run simulations, and perform post-layout verification and extraction.
- Collaborate closely with layout engineers to implement HV-safe structures and meet LVS/DRC/PEX requirements.
- Evaluate device stress, safe operating area (SOA), lifetime reliability, and implement risk-mitigation strategies.
- Lead silicon bring-up, characterization, debugging, and failure analysis.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and background; listed as core requirements and a few preferred additions.
- Minimum 5+ years of relevant IC design experience; experience in life sciences, synthetic biology, or biopharma is a plus.
- Direct experience designing and taking to production circuits in high-voltage IC technologies (BCD, HV CMOS, SOI, or power IC processes).
- Practical knowledge of design challenges for high-voltage devices (typically >40 V) and design of HV driver circuits for capacitive or electrochemical loads (kHz–MHz range).
- Transistor-level analog design experience: current/voltage bias, bandgap references, amplifiers, LDOs, DAC/ADC, and level shifters (LV→HV).
- Proficiency with Cadence Virtuoso and Spectre or comparable tools for noise, mismatch, Monte Carlo, and pre/post-layout extraction.
- Layout design collaboration and physical verification experience (LVS, DRC, PEX).
- Understanding of ESD, latch-up, device stress, SOA, and lifetime/reliability concerns.
- Silicon bring-up ownership, characterization, debugging, and participation in failure analysis.
- Good communication and collaboration skills; ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Nice-to-have: Verilog-A modeling and AMS simulation experience; prior SOI or power-IC process work.
Education Requirements
PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, OR MS with 5+ years of relevant experience, OR BS with 5+ years of relevant experience. Related technical fields and equivalent practical experience are acceptable per the stated criteria.
