Microelectronics R&D Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Electronic Systems and Cyber Technologies Group to conduct microelectronics research and hardware security testing. The role focuses on identifying hardware vulnerabilities, developing mitigations, and producing prototypes and test hardware.

Work includes PCB design and testing, analog circuit simulation and design, FPGA prototyping, and close collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team in a mission-driven environment.

Experience Level

Mid-level. The posting specifies a graduate-level background or equivalent practical experience: a Master's degree is cited as the standard, with two years of hardware engineering experience accepted in lieu of the degree.

Responsibilities

Primary technical and team responsibilities include:

• Research microelectronic trends and evaluate hardware vulnerabilities such as side-channel attacks and anti-tamper techniques.
• Design, prototype, and test printed circuit boards (PCBs).
• Design and simulate analog circuits (SPICE-based simulations).
• Prototype designs on FPGAs and develop associated test benches.
• Develop and execute hardware security and exploitation test plans.
• Create and maintain test environments in simulation and on development boards.
• Document designs, test results, and maintain organized engineering records.
• Collaborate with local and distributed teammates; communicate technical results clearly.

Requirements

Key must-have qualifications and skills, followed by desirable skills:

• Must-have: U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
• Must-have: Strong analytical, debugging, and troubleshooting skills; attention to detail in documentation and organization.
• Must-have: Practical experience designing and testing PCBs, analog and digital circuits, and prototyping on FPGAs.
• Must-have: Ability to evaluate and solve engineering problems independently and as part of a team.
• Nice-to-have: Hardware design languages (Verilog, VHDL, SystemVerilog); SPICE simulation experience.
• Nice-to-have: Embedded programming in C/C++ on Linux or bare metal; debugging via JTAG.
• Nice-to-have: Experience with hardware security, cryptographic algorithms, signal processing, and data analysis.
• Nice-to-have: Familiarity with tools such as Quartus/Vivado, LTSpice/Spectre, Altium/Allegro, and common office productivity tools.

Education Requirements

The posting specifies a Master of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or a relevant technical field). Two years of hardware engineering experience may substitute for the Master's degree. A Ph.D. in Electrical or Computer Engineering is listed as preferred. Equivalence of practical experience is explicitly allowed.
