Microcontroller Sub-System Design Engineer
QualcommJob Title
Microcontroller Sub-System Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join the Microcontroller Sub-System IP team to lead architecture and RTL design for embedded processing solutions across SoCs used in IoT, Mobile, Auto, XR and Compute products. The role focuses on micro-architecture, RTL implementation quality, post-silicon bring-up, and cross-functional integration.
This is a senior technical role with responsibility for design trade-offs, optimization (area/power/performance), and mentoring across verification, implementation, firmware and DFT teams.
Experience Level
Senior-level. The posting seeks candidates with substantial ASIC/subsystem ownership; examples in the description reference 10+ years of ASIC design experience and minimum qualifications that scale with degree (see Education Requirements).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include technical leadership, RTL delivery, and cross-team integration.
- Define and drive micro-architecture for digital blocks and subsystems; make architecture/design trade-offs.
- Lead RTL development using industry best practices for multi-clock, high-frequency, low-power designs.
- Perform root-cause analysis and lead debugging during development and post-silicon bring-up.
- Produce clear design documentation and lead architecture/design reviews to ensure maintainability and reuse.
- Optimize designs for area, power, and performance while balancing product and implementation constraints.
- Collaborate with DFT, Implementation, Verification, Emulation, and Firmware teams and mentor junior engineers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; nice-to-have items noted where applicable.
- Must: Extensive ASIC and subsystem digital design experience, including ownership of complex subsystem or SoC deliverables.
- Must: Proven experience designing and delivering complex digital logic blocks for high-performance, low-power environments.
- Must: Familiarity with ISAs such as ARM THUMB or RISC-V and strong processor/microcontroller system-level understanding.
- Must: Deep experience with multi-power-domain and multi-clock-domain design and associated verification challenges.
- Must: Proficiency in scripting/automation (e.g. Python or Perl) for design and verification automation.
- Must: Demonstrated technical leadership: mentoring, influencing design methodology, and driving cross-functional execution.
- Must: Experience with industry-standard digital design tools and flows; awareness of lower-node technology trade-offs.
- Nice-to-have: Prior involvement in post-silicon bring-up and system integration across product lines.
Education Requirements
Degrees accepted: Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in Science, Engineering, or a related field. Minimum experience varies by degree: Bachelor's +6 years, Master’s +5 years, PhD +4 years; or equivalent practical experience.
