Master Thesis Student – Compiler Optimization for RISC-V Processors
Role Summary
Join the engineering team in Leuven as a Master's thesis student to analyze microarchitectural features of the RMX7xx, RHX1xx, and RPX1xx RISC-V processor families and develop LLVM compiler enhancements to improve code generation and application performance.
Your work will include performance analysis, benchmarking, and close collaboration with processor architects to validate hardware-software co-optimizations.
Experience Level
Entry-level — position intended for a current Master's student completing a thesis.
Responsibilities
As part of your master's thesis you will:
- Analyze microarchitectural characteristics of the RMX7xx, RHX1xx, and RPX1xx processor families.
- Study processor pipelines, instruction scheduling, instruction fusion opportunities, and multi-issue execution behavior.
- Identify performance bottlenecks and compiler-driven optimization opportunities.
- Design, implement, and validate new optimizations in the LLVM compiler framework.
- Evaluate the impact of compiler enhancements using benchmarking and profiling.
- Collaborate with processor architects and software engineers on hardware-software interactions.
- Document findings and present recommendations for future compiler and processor improvements.
Requirements
Must-have skills and attributes:
- Strong understanding of computer architecture and processor design concepts.
- Knowledge of compiler fundamentals, optimization techniques, and code generation.
- Proficiency in C/C++ programming.
- Familiarity with Linux development environments and common development tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and collaborate with experts.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with LLVM or other compiler infrastructures.
- Knowledge of RISC-V architecture and instruction set concepts.
- Understanding of processor microarchitecture, pipelining, and performance optimization.
- Experience with benchmarking, profiling, or performance analysis tools.
- Exposure to embedded systems or low-level software development.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (Master's thesis project required).
