Job Title
Manager, Systems Design and Architecture
Role Summary
Lead the Architecture and Hardware team in Micron’s Storage and Memory Systems (SMS) Pathfinding group to define system-level architecture, prototype hardware platforms, and conduct applied research for next-generation memory and storage technologies. Responsible for technical leadership, program execution, external collaboration, and delivering evaluations that inform product roadmaps.
Work includes architecture evaluation, FPGA-based prototyping, AI infrastructure integration, and cross-functional coordination with product groups and external partners.
Experience Level
Senior-level — typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Lead and execute system architecture, prototyping, and programs that quantify performance, power, and cost tradeoffs for advanced memory and storage technologies.
- Lead system-level architecture evaluation, prototyping, and pathfinding for CXL, DDR/LPDDR, HBM, NVMe, disaggregated memory, and FPGA-based controller emulation.
- Define requirements, success metrics, and experimental methodologies for performance, power, cost, and scalability.
- Collaborate with software, modeling, and product teams to validate architectures on real AI workloads.
- Manage multi-year internal and externally funded programs: milestones, deliverables, procurement, integration, lab bring-up, validation, and readiness.
- Engage vendors, research organizations, and standards bodies; support executive briefings and roadmap discussions.
- Manage, mentor, and develop senior engineers across hardware, RTL/FPGA, board design, and system validation.
- Own resource planning, staffing, budgets, lab safety, compliance, and operational continuity.
Requirements
Must-have technical and leadership qualifications; preferred items listed separately.
Must-have:
- 10+ years of experience in systems architecture, hardware design, storage, memory, or AI infrastructure.
- Proven experience leading and managing senior technical teams and complex engineering programs.
- Deep understanding of memory hierarchies, storage systems, and system-level performance analysis (HBM, DDR/LPDDR, SSDs, NAND).
- Working knowledge of AI compute and storage system architectures and xPU memory-storage interactions.
- Strong written and verbal communication, including executive-level presentations.
- Ability to operate effectively amid ambiguity and changing priorities.
Nice-to-have:
- FPGA-based prototyping, hardware emulation, RTL/verification flows, board-level development, electrical debug, and lab bring-up experience.
- System-level performance, power/energy/TCO modeling, and advanced packaging/interconnect evaluation experience.
- Experience with government-funded programs, national labs, or participation in standards bodies (JEDEC, UCIe, SNIA, NVMe, PCI-SIG).
- Experience integrating AI tools into engineering workflows.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is required; Master’s or PhD is preferred. The posting pairs the degree expectation with a requirement for 10+ years of relevant experience.
