Role Summary
Lead a sub-department of ~12–15 digital/VHDL engineers and managers within the San Diego Engineering & Sciences Software and Digital Technologies organization. Balance people management responsibilities with hands-on technical work (approximately 80% program-facing) on communications systems for Fighter Networked Systems (FNS) and Advanced Comms & Networks (ACN).
Accountable for staffing, performance management, process improvement, and delivery quality. Position requires on-site presence at the Rancho Carmel facility and occasional travel (~10%).
Experience Level
Senior-level manager. Typical experience guidance: substantial prior engineering and management experience (senior/manager level; employer specifies senior experience expectations).
Responsibilities
Manage people, technical delivery, and engineering process for digital/VHDL teams.
- Lead and mentor direct reports and subordinate managers; conduct performance reviews and career development.
- Plan staffing to meet program needs and strategic growth; recruit and coordinate with HR on compensation.
- Perform technical engineering work on assigned programs (~80% individual contributor time on program tasks).
- Refine and maintain digital engineering processes, tools, and design assurance practices.
- Coordinate with programs to translate requirements into implementable digital designs and test plans.
- Cultivate an inclusive workplace and address performance or conflict-resolution issues as needed.
Requirements
Must-have technical, security, and managerial qualifications.
- Active U.S. Secret security clearance required to start.
- Significant direct experience in digital engineering and VHDL design and verification.
- Proven experience as a functional manager or technical team leader; experience managing managers preferred.
- Proficiency in engineering process development and execution; familiarity with multiple engineering disciplines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work both independently and in teams.
- Ability to facilitate/mediate conflict resolution and provide career guidance to staff.
- Willingness and ability to work on site at the Rancho Carmel facility in San Diego and travel ~10%.
- Nice-to-have: experience with FPGA toolchains, board/system debug, translating system requirements into programmable logic, and DoD communications systems.
Education Requirements
Employer specifies degree-and-experience combinations: Bachelor’s degree in a related STEM field plus 8 years of related experience, or Master’s degree plus 6 years of related experience.
