Lead FPGA / Embedded-Systems Engineer
Role Summary
Lead the FPGA prototype design and embedded-systems work for Arm's Solution Engineering Hardware Platforms team, collaborating with software and board engineers across Cambridge and Manchester. Deliver FPGA-based development platforms used for software enablement and IP validation internally and with partners.
This role combines hands-on RTL and implementation work with team leadership, project planning and engineering-release responsibilities focused on quality and delivery efficiency.
Experience Level
Senior β lead-level engineering role. Relevant experience leading FPGA/embedded teams and delivery across multi-disciplinary projects is expected.
Responsibilities
The role requires technical leadership plus hands-on FPGA and delivery responsibilities including:
- Lead and mentor a team of FPGA and embedded engineers.
- Translate high-level requirements into technical and delivery requirements; break work into deliverable packages for project planning.
- Produce and track project plans, identify and manage risks, and report status.
- Generate FPGA prototype designs for enablement and validation, working with software and board engineers.
- Develop FPGA implementations targeting internal and third-party platforms to demonstrate IP products.
- Commission FPGA prototyping hardware and specify peripheral hardware.
- Implement RTL changes, apply implementation constraints, and prepare clear technical documentation.
- Drive engineering release flows with a focus on automation, efficiency and quality.
- Use techniques such as gated clock conversion and synthesizable models to produce accurate representations of systems.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution:
- Detailed knowledge of the FPGA design flow: RTL design, simulation, synthesis, place & route.
- Proven understanding of ASIC/SoC prototyping in FPGA.
- Strong RTL skills in Verilog, SystemVerilog or VHDL.
- Demonstrated technical leadership and experience producing and managing project plans across teams.
- Excellent written and spoken English and ability to produce clear technical documentation.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience debugging complex designs across hardware, simulation and embedded software.
- Familiarity with Xilinx UltraScale+ devices and associated tool flows.
- Experience with Synplify for single-FPGA implementations and DDR memory subsystem implementation.
- Knowledge of Arm IP, AMBA standards and Arm assembler.
- Practical scripting experience in Tcl, Python, Perl or shell for design automation.
- Experience with low-level programming languages (C, C++) and assembly.
