Lead Firmware Test Automation Engineer
Role Summary
Lead validation and test-automation efforts for OpenBMC firmware across enterprise server and storage platforms. Architect scalable automation frameworks, establish validation methodologies, drive CI/CD integration, and provide technical leadership across multiple projects and customer programs.
Experience Level
Senior - typically 8+ years in firmware validation, automation, or embedded systems; 5+ years of hands-on BMC/OpenBMC validation and automation experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include defining automation strategy, building validation infrastructure, and coordinating cross-functional validation activities.
- Define and execute OpenBMC automation roadmap and validation strategy.
- Design and implement scalable automation frameworks and reusable libraries.
- Develop and maintain validation plans, automation suites, and test strategies.
- Ensure comprehensive validation coverage: functional, regression, stress, performance, security, compliance, interoperability.
- Integrate automated validation into CI/CD pipelines and improve execution efficiency.
- Develop test infrastructure: automated firmware deployment, provisioning, orchestration, log collection, and reporting.
- Lead defect triage, root-cause analysis, and customer/field issue investigations.
- Mentor and guide automation engineers; establish coding standards and validation best practices.
- Collaborate with firmware, hardware, platform architecture, program teams, and customers on validation requirements and risk mitigation.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Hands-on OpenBMC validation, automation, and debugging experience.
- Expert proficiency in Python and Robot Framework for test-framework development.
- Experience automating and validating Redfish, IPMI, PLDM, MCTP, and SPDM interfaces.
- Understanding of OpenBMC architecture and components (D-Bus, BMCWeb, phosphor services, Entity Manager, Virtual Media, Firmware Update, User Management).
- Experience with AST2500, AST2600, or AST2700 BMC SoC platforms.
- Strong knowledge of server platform architecture and BIOS–BMC interactions (inventory, sensors, power/thermal management).
- Proficient with Linux, shell scripting, networking, system services, and log analysis.
- Experience with CI/CD and DevOps tooling: Jenkins, Git, GitHub/GitLab, Gerrit, and pipeline integration.
- Experience developing automation for firmware deployment, platform provisioning, test execution, log collection, and automated reporting.
- Familiarity with test-management and defect-tracking tools such as JIRA.
- Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills across firmware, software, and hardware integration.
Nice-to-have:
- OpenBMC upstream development or testing experience.
- Experience with enterprise server, storage, or datacenter platforms.
- Familiarity with containerized test environments and infrastructure automation.
- Experience building reusable automation libraries and validation frameworks.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
