Lead Customer Safety Engineer

Role Summary

The Lead Customer Safety Engineer is the primary technical safety liaison for automotive customers integrating NVIDIA hardware into safety-critical systems. This hardware-centered, customer-facing role coordinates internal functional-safety teams, supports customer validation and integration, and drives resolution of safety issues.

Collaborates with safety management, solution architects, hardware and software engineering, sales, and technical marketing to ensure products meet applicable functional-safety requirements.

Base salary range: 224,000 USD - 356,500 USD (location and experience dependent).

Experience Level

Senior - minimum 12 years of relevant engineering experience, including more than 3 years in automotive functional safety, chip or ECU development, or customer safety engineering.

Responsibilities

Main responsibilities include representing NVIDIA safety strategy to customers, guiding integrations, and resolving safety-related issues.

  • Represent NVIDIA’s functional safety strategy and hardware architectures to customers.
  • Serve as the principal customer interface for hardware safety topics and translate customer needs into clear actions for internal teams.
  • Assist customers in safely integrating and validating NVIDIA products in vehicle systems.
  • Coordinate Development Interface Agreements and clarify the division of safety responsibilities between NVIDIA and customers.
  • Support and tailor customer-facing safety collaterals and safety analyses for strategic customers.
  • Lead resolution of customer safety questions, gaps, and change requests by engaging appropriate subject-matter experts.
  • Mentor junior customer safety engineers and establish consistent practices for technical reviews and customer communication.

Requirements

Must-have qualifications and skills.

  • At least 12 years of engineering experience, with more than 3 years in automotive functional safety, chip/ECU development, or customer safety engineering.
  • Solid understanding of ISO 26262 hardware safety concepts (SEooC development, assumptions of use, hardware safety integrity); familiarity with IEC 61508 is a plus.
  • Proven ability to lead complex technical discussions with OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, assessors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional teams and driving technical closure on safety issues.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience in ADAS, autonomous vehicles, robotics, or industrial safety.
  • Direct experience assisting automotive OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers.
  • Hardware functional-safety experience with complex SoCs, GPUs, processors, accelerators, or safety MCUs.
  • Knowledge of ECU/board-level E/E build and validation.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, hardware engineering, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
