Layout Engineering Intern

Role Summary

Internship on a mixed-signal IC layout team in Freising, Germany. Work focuses on layout design for DC/DC converters, power stages and controller ICs used across consumer, industrial, automotive and data-center applications.

The role supports block-level layout, floorplanning, parasitic extraction, physical verification and automation of layout tasks, working with analog/digital designers and cross-functional teams.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship for students in the final years of an undergraduate or master’s program. No specific professional years-of-experience required.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include hands-on layout tasks and supporting verification and automation efforts.

  • Block-level IC layout, top-level integration and floorplanning.
  • Power transistor and package lead-frame design for discrete and module devices.
  • Die and package-board parasitic extraction and post-layout analysis.
  • Physical verification and post-layout checks (DRC, LVS, EM, ESD).
  • Use and development of tools/scripts to automate layout tasks and area estimation.
  • Participate in layout design reviews and collaborate with analog/digital designers, product engineers and program managers.
  • Support design-flow automation and verification functions.

Requirements

Must-have education items are listed under Education Requirements. Other technical and interpersonal expectations follow:

  • Preferred: good understanding of analog electronics theory and device physics.
  • Preferred: experience with Cadence Virtuoso or equivalent IC layout tools.
  • Preferred: Unix and Cadence database management skills; shell or programming skills are a plus.
  • Preferred: familiarity with switching DC-DC regulator layouts and analog IC layout practices.
  • Strong teamwork, communication (English required, German a plus) and time-management skills.

Education Requirements

Posting requests candidates in the final years of ongoing studies: Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent technical field; equivalent technical experience acceptable.
